The invention is in the field of amorphous silicas and processes for their preparation.
2. Description of the Prior Art
Amorphous silicas have many applications. They are highly dispersible in various organic liquids and have a surprisingly low density and relatively low viscosity. They may be used as base materials for many rubbers, adhesives, coatings, fillers, and the like.
In general, the chemical and physical properties of organic fluids are strongly dependent upon the nature of the liquid medium and the physical state of the individual components of the fluid. In general, the greater the portion of liquid phase in a material, the greater the physical and chemical stability of the material. For this reason, many polymers are inherently less stable in their melts than in their powders, solutions and high molecular weight oligomers. Amorphous silicas are useful as additives for organic materials such as fillers, molding powders and reinforcing agents for polymeric materials. They are dispersible in organic liquids and promote low viscosity and high flow.
An amorphous silica of nominal composition 50.4 SiO.sub.2 and 24.2 H.sub.2 O has been described by Gerischer et al in Rhein.anstrum, 139, 50-52 (1970). This material was prepared by precipitation from a slurry of non-silicated water using a sodium silicate solution as the precipitant.
A process is described in U.S. Pat. No. 3,898,260 for the synthesis of anhydrous amorphous silicas in which silica-containing powders are heated in a vessel
